Budapest is a well traveled destination and for good reason. It’s a beautiful city to wander around with cute little cafes and shops at every corner. I could have easily just walked the city with no plans and had a great time. You do not need a subway pass, the entire city and all destinations are easily walkable.
The city is also incredibly safe. It is one of the few destinations I would say you can put your guard down and not watch your things like a hawk. It was even safe at night. Actually I recommend that you wander at night. Budapest literally transforms into a completely different city in darkness, I basically recommend to see all of the sights listed below during the day and then again at night. These are the sights I had on my list for everyday but on your way you will stumble upon many parks, installations, graffiti, vegan cafes, gluten free bakeries, and much more. Stop at all of them
Firstly when you land it is 1000 HUF, about 3 dollars, to get from the airport to the center of the city by bus. Take the E100 located right outside the airport, grab your ticket from one of the machines located next to the buses. It will take you about one hour with traffic to get to the center of the city.
Day 1: Opera house, Saint Stephen Basicillica, Antifascist monument, Parliament, stroll along the Danube promenade and see the shoes on Danube.
Day 2: Castle District, Royal palace, Matthias Church, and Fishermans Bastion
Day 3: Jewish quarters, great synagogue, the great market, and the Citadel hike at sunset.
Day 4: Gozsdu Udvar, Andrassay Avenue, museum of terror, Heroes square, city park, and end it all with the famous Szechneyi Baths
The Szechneyi Baths were one of the highlights of our trip. We arrived at the baths around 8pm and stayed until closing, 10pm. We ended up paying a great discount because we only paid for half of the day. The two hours were perfect, just enough:) . There are many different options to choose from once inside the baths but my favorite part was the outside area with the different jets, waterfalls, lazy river, and more! It is the perfect way to end the vacation. You will be doing a lot of walking in Budapest and this will definitely send you home refreshed!
Added notes:
- Here are some pictures of food that we enjoyed while in Budapest
2. And here are some random art finds we captured on our journey
3. Budapest has an amazing night life. It’s a great place to bar hop and enjoy, and again it’s totally safe. The ruin bars are a very popular area for young Western travelers. The most famous ruin bar is Szimpla Kert.
4. LAST NOTE: I highly recommend seeing the museum of terror, I was prepared to learn more about the holocaust, however it provided an expansive history of Hungary. It included detailed information about the Soviet Union’s control over the country. It will make your skin crawl and make you think differently while walking down the now posh Andrássy street. Step back in time and learn about the area when first Nazi’s and then the Soviets reigned over it.
All in all if you are looking for a city escape, Budapest really is a cute city. If I have the chance to go back to Hungary, I’d rent a car and see more of the countryside.
