My father and I set off on an incredible tenting adventure through Denmark, Sweden, and Norway the summer of 2016. We started the trip with three days in Copenhagen, and it was just enough time to completely fall in love with the city. Firstly, YOU MUST RENT A BIKE!! The city is easily bikeable, in fact there are more people cycling than driving! I also recommend that you travel with a tent and make use of the Nords modern campgrounds. I highly recommend Charlottenlund Fort: http://campingcopenhagen.dk/ as your camping ground in Copenhagen. You can rent your bikes daily from them as well.
The largest complaint I hear from people wanting to visit these countries is how expensive they are. It is true, these countries are not cheap however proper planning will help! Tenting will ensure you don’t completely go bankrupt sleeping, so pack an extra bag with a tent and other camping materials. Also do not eat at restaurants, go food shopping and keep things simple. I think the nature in these countries are their best offerings (especially Norway); Therefore tenting, hiking, and eating fruits and veggies from the supermarket will ensure an amazing nordic trip 🙂
Also if you plan on heading over to Sweden or Norway after Copenhagen, than starting Copenhagen is best. Renting your car in Copenhagen will be the cheapest place to rent. Make sure to make a circuit out of the trip and you can return it back to Copenhagen in the end. We ended the trip with a cruise from Oslo to Copenhagen. The cruise ships stores your car in the basement.
Day 1: Explore the waterfront at the campgrounds. There is a beautiful walk or ride along the water. After hop on your bike and ride into town. You will pass so many beautiful churches and monuments as you ride around. Take a ride to see the little mermaid and then cycle over to Nyhavn. Spend time walking the old streets of Nyhavn and grab yourself a gelato as a treat 🙂 Stay around this area at night.
Day 2: Take a cycle through Freetown Christiania. This is a part of the country that is considered free and not part of the EU. This is an artsy area where cannabis is legally sold and smoked. I recommend taking a look around, it is quite interesting. Then head over to Tivoli gardens. It is a cute Danish theme park. Then cycle over to Christiansborg Palace. I didn’t go in but I did enjoy wandering around the exterior. Finally head over to Rosenborg Castle and enjoy the gardens, if you would like take a look inside the castle. I love being outdoors so I just wandered around the gardens and enjoyed the greenery.
I don’t believe you are allowed to take pictures in Christiania. But you can sneak this one while you are leaving 🙂
Grab a cotton candy while in Tivoli .
Day 3: For your last day get over to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. I normally don’t recommend museums, however this museum is A MUST SEE! On the way back we headed to Ben Bla Planet which is a quite aquarium located on the water. I really enjoyed the interactive butterfly exhibit.
I could have easily rode my bike around everyday aimlessly and still had the best time in Copenhagen. It is clean and beautiful and easy to fall in love with. I hope you enjoy the city as much as I did!
