Georgia the country NOT THE STATE!! Ananuri and Kazbegi

Kazbegi- Gergeti Church
Kazbegi is the third or second largest mountain in Georgia ( according to which source you ask), it is about 2 hours North of Tbilisi in the Caucasian Mountains.  It’s located right on the border of Russia.  Of course I figured out the local bus system and instead of paying 75 USD for a round trip pass, Phil and I hopped on a bus with the locals for 10 dollars round trip (definitely pays to do your research).
The ride up is gorgeous we stopped at Ananuri which is a castle complex on the Aragvi River.

After leaving Ananuri we continued our trip up North, and relaxed as we watched the scenery change.  Before we knew it we were surrounded by mountains and snow!

Kazbegi!

Gergeti Church is the small structure in the centre of the picture on top of the mountain.  Kazbegi is the mountain in the clouds to the right of the picture.

Before heading up for the long trek we had to eat and warm our toes!
and off we go!

Gergeti Church! We made it in 1 hour!! The estimated time to climb the mountain was 3 hours, however we arrived late and needed to climb the hill in one hour, and descend in an hour to be able to catch the last marshtruka (minibus) back to Tbilisi!  What they did in 6 hours we did in 2 hours- We came. We saw. We conquered!

But I really wish we had more time up there. The view was just incredible!

Well deserved “Selfie”

    Hi Julie,
When you travelled from Ananuri to Kazbegi, did you take the local buses as well. Was it frequent?
    Thanks

I used the marshrutkas, the local buses. It did not run too often but its ok, you will enjoy wandering around Ananuri while you wait. The bigger problem was getting back to Tblisi from Kazbegi! I remember the last marshrutkas was at 5pm to get back to Tbilisi from Kazbegi. We missed the marshrutkas along with some other tourists and paid a local guy to drive us back. We all split the price which helped a lot. When you get to Kazbegi give yourself enough time to climb the mountain as well as enjoy the sights from above. We felt rushed with only a few hours.
