Kerala (Varkala, Alleppey, Kochi)

This was my second visit to India.  This time I decided to visit the South.  Many people at my job recommended Kerala, so I hoped on plane and decided to check it out.  Here is my five day itinerary with three different destinations.  I hope you enjoy it.

Day 1: Nov 30th- Arrived at Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) airport.  Checked into The Royal Heritage Hotel late at night.  It cost me 17 dollars a night for two people to stay there.

The train rides were safe, easy, and fun… just a bit hot (get a window seat).

Day 2: Dec 1st-  Took the train from Trivandrum to Varkala station.  From the station you can walk to the beach if you didn’t pack too many belongings.  Or you can hire a tuktuk.  They will be waiting to pick up tourists.  Make sure to haggle.  I stayed at The Hill Top Ayurvedic Beach Resort.  I loved the place and highly recommend staying there!  It cost me 28 dollars a night for two people.  We stayed two nights.

Day 3: Dec 2nd- ENJOY VARKALA!  This is a beautiful beach with so many activities offered.  Learn to surf or just stroll along the beach.  There are fancy resorts there if you choose to splurge.  The restaurants and hotels are located on the hilltops overlooking the beach.  During the day you can walk along the shops and buy really pretty dresses and fine jewelry.  At night indulge! The restaurants sell all of the fresh fish they caught during the day.  The fish will be on display in front of the restaurants.  Again haggle!

Day 4: Dec 3rd: Again hop on the train from Varkala and get off at Alappuzha.  From there walk over to the Alleppey boat houses and haggle yourself a night on one of the infamous Alleppey boathouses.  These boats offer you dinner and a stroll through the Alleppey back waters.

Day 5: Kochi.  I wish we had more time in Kochi.  I really only had the morning to look around and check out this cute hipster fisherman town.  I loved the art and life of the place.  If I was you I would spend at least two days here.

Kochi (Cochin)

All in all the trip was fun.  There were plenty of things to see and do, and everything was inexpensive…. my favorite thing about INDIA!
