Nungwi & Kiwengwa, Zanzibar

  • Day 1: Chill out on the beaches of nungwi. Have drinks and take a stroll to Kendwa beach.

  • Day 2: Visit the Turtle Reserve and swim with them

  • Day 3: Take a boat trip to Mnemba for snorkelling (THIS WAS INCREDIBLE!!)

  • Day 4: Travel to Kiwengwa and rent a bike

  • Day 5: Bike around Kiwengwa, take a ride through the villages and talk to the people. You will be surprised how kind they all are!  Also check out Kiwengwa caves.

Chilling out on a hammock in Nungwi.

In my opinion, you really didn’t experience the beauty of Zanzibar until you have seen Nungwi.  Relax and chill out on the beaches and make sure to visit the turtle reserve, or even better… stay at the turtle reserve like I did.

Wake up every morning and take a swim with these friendly creatures.  Make sure to bring a snorkel with you.  Watching them swim with you is just incredible.

The turtle reserve had only three huts available for rent at very decent prices.  If you don’t stay at the resort you have to pay a fee of 10 dollars to swim with the turtles.  However if you stay there then you can jump in with them anytime you want!

Nungwi is full of fun! Everyone is out on the beautiful beaches enjoying the weather.  At night the hotels and restaurants set up tables on the beach and you can enjoy fresh seafood and drinks while you watch the sunsets.

Also hop on a boat and go snorkeling off the coast of Mnemba island.  The coral reef there was just amazing.

Also I can’t stress this enough.  Take a walk through town and talk to locals.  They are the kindest people, and they love to strike up conversations and learn more about you and of course share tons about themselves.

Kiwengwa was a much quieter reserved area. More like big resorts for families or people who just want to relax in solitude.  My friend and I rented bikes and made the most of the area.  I hate sitting in resorts, in my opinion its for old people.  We went and took a look at the caves, and villages, and talked to many of the locals.  There were actually some really amazing surprises around of every corner.  I suggest you just hop on a bike and get lost and enjoy what you find.
